Merry Mix Show 2018 Featuring Nina Nesbitt, Marc Roberge, Michael Franti and The Backstreet Boys12/17/2018
December 16th, 2018
I was really excited to be able to cover Mix 94.7’s Merry Mix Show, as I’ve wanted to go in the past but never could attend. Entry into the venue was the HEB Center in Cedar Park was easy and took about five minutes to get through security. There were plenty of food options and the merchandise table was set up across from the VIP meet and greet line.
The show started swiftly at Seven as advertised with the opening act, Scottish singer Nina Nesbitt. I had never heard of her before, but what an amazing singer she turned out to be! The second I heard her, I imagined that if I were a judge on the voice, I would have hit my button immediately to turn around to choose her to be on my team.
She said she would be returning to Austin in February and I recommend seeing her in an intimate venue before she becomes one of those artists who sell out large arenas. I could easily see her doing so. Watch a clip of Nina singing from the show below:
Next up, Marc Roberge from OAR . Though Marc sounded as though he was a little nervous at first, he quickly settled into his vocals and performed a solid set. In the middle of his set, he brought out Jon Lampley from OAR, who accompanied with a trumpet.
Third performance was by Michael Franti who was an excellent choice for a Backstreet Boys opener, as he got the crowd extremely pumped up.
During his set, Michael spoke about how he reached out to fellow musician Victoria Canal, who is 19, on Instagram via Direct Message to ask if she wanted to go on tour with him. She said the day she got that message was her last day of school and she’s been touring with him ever since. Michael then told a story about how he was adopted by his parents when they already had three children of their own, but they knew how many children were up for adoption and decided to adopt him and his brother; as well as how diverse their family is. He said he was bullied growing up and asked Victoria about her experience, as she was born with only half of an arm; She said her parents told her when there are no heroes around who look like you, be your own hero. You can watch clips of their performance below: After a seemingly long set change, the Backstreet Boys came out to roaring applause through a smoke-filled stage. I was extremely impressed by their sound and their still seemingly-flawless dance moves. They also have incredible audience interaction, which is what I look for at a concert, but I guess that’s the benefit of having 25 years of experience under your belt. I highly recommend seeing them live if you get the chance. I hear their Vegas show is great. Below is a video of the audience singing along to Queen and then the opening of the BSB performance -- sorry for the quality, I had to move a few times!
